Media Studies
Right wing media and the
effects on society.
In the present day media a split between left and right wing is becoming ever bigger. To focus a media studies essay on either of the wings entirely would be to great a task so I have decided to focus my attention on two different right wing personalities. The individuals in question include extremist Alex Jones and incendiary and opinionated journalist Katie Hopkins.
We’ll start with Alex Jones and the insane comments and ideas he spreads. A major controversy started in Europe following Jones comments about how “ more guns equals less crime.” Everyone is entitled to their opinion on gun control and crime in the US but it's very hard to see how any sane minded person would agree with this comment.
The amount of sane people in the world must be decreasing because in two weeks this comment got over 60,000 likes. This is also one of the ways an extremist like Jones gains any sort of following.
Jones also says that “ there is an alien force, not of this world attacking humanity, like the bible.”. As previously stated everyone is entitled to their opinion of religion and religious following but this quote caused many problems across the world but especially in the US southern states of Alabama and Mississippi. Many of jones followers are from these southern states. A Lot of the local residents are very born again christians so this comment didn't sit well with them.
These quotes, along with the belief that the US government puts chemicals in the water that turns the frogs gay makes me wonder how Alex jones got a platform in the first place?
The truth is Alex Jones gained many followers through his outrageous twitter account which he started in 2008. Once he was banned from all the other social media outlets including Facebook, instagram and youtube his twitter account became a lot more important. Finally on the 6th of September 2018 twitter decided to bite the bullet and remove this racist, homophobic and outrageous man from their website.
Even though all of these actions have been taken to prevent the spread of jones ridiculous ideas he still has an ability to spread his ideas through his podcast and radio show.
I move on to a journalist who has different but equally insane views as Alex Jones. That is former LBC, BBC and News of the world employee Katie Hopkins.
" Ginger Babies, like a baby just so much harder to Love."
The above quote is a quote from Mrs Hopkins that is truly outrageous. This isn't like one of Alex Jones comments because this isn't an opinion anyone agreed with. This is a comment deliberately fired at a certain extent of the British and Irish people to make them feel as if they are a lower class than everyone else for an unchangeable gene. The truth is we should all compliment people on their looks and not criticise for an insane “opinion.”
"I rather admire the efficiency of Ebola. From a Malthusian and marketing perspective, it is beyond reproach"
This is an extremely racist and outrageous quote. Hopkins is admiring the ebola virus for its way of killing the West African people. I don't care what views you hold it is insane to admire a disease with lethal effects.
The fact that both of these journalist have large followings is insane and wrong and this affects society because people begin to agree with these people causing to treat people differently. In Katie Hopkins case if people began to treat ginger people differently a large amount of the people are being discriminated against.
I hope that this has effectively shown why Right Wing media has a large effect on society.
