I did the following project as part of the Public speaking module.
Arming Gardaí.
Slide 1
Slide 2
In my opinion Irish gardai are not properly equipped to deal with day to day threats that modern day criminals pose. Rank and file Gardai are equipped with pepper spray, handcuffs and a batton, exactly the same equipment as they had in 1970 when pepper spray was introduced. An Garda Siochana was set up as an unarmed police force in 1922, but 1922 was a long time ago. I think we can all agree that the times, people and crimes have changed in that time, do we really want to live in the past?
Slide 3
You may ask yourself if there is a necessity for the gardai to carry guns, let me assure you there is. This (pointing to the slide) is Garda Tony Golden who was shot in the head 3 times causing him fatal injuries in the Louth town of Omeath. He was reacting to a domestic violence dispute involving an armed dissident republican. The truth is that if the gardai were equipped properly Garda Golden’s kids would grow up with a loving father.
Slide 4
In June 2017 London's Metropolitan police were forced to react to 3 major terrorist attacks within the space of 8 minutes. Unarmed police attended all three crime scenes within minutes but had not adequate resources and equipment to deal with the perpetrators. While unarmed officers awaited armed response personnel another 5 deaths had taken place. Armed response Gardai have a larger area to cover and are fewer in numbers. This begs the question are Gardai expected to deal with serious gun and drug crime with inadequate equipment and resources.
Slide 5
There is always the worry that carrier criminals will up their arms if the gardai arm themselves but the truth is that major league criminals don't care about the gardai or the public and are armed irrespective of what others do. We are living in the past if we believe gardai will face Criminal cartels without arms. If we choose not to arm our gardai we run the risk of losing our incredible island to these savages that currently rule the streets of inner city Dublin and LImerick.
Slide 6
I realise the destruction that the trigger happy police have caused in US. But there are plenty of countries across the world especially in europe with armed police forces that the nations people respect. Thats where An garda siochana have failed. They are meant to keep the peace but in recent years they have been the cause of many disputes. In Denmark the introduction of arms in january 2009 to their police force saw crime rates fall by 64%. Yet in only twelve shoots were fired that year. Gardai need to use guns as a deterrent like in Denmark to show criminals that gardaí are there and that they do care.
Slide 7
Madam adjudicator Ireland is a developed country in the twenty first century yet we can't justify training and arming gardai properly to deal with crimes that occur in 21st century ireland. I truly believe we are still living in the past, because at this stage a unarmed police force is ludicrous. Its time we took a stand.
Thank you
Arming Gardaí.

- Good morning Madam adjudicator.
- Would you like to fear for your safety at work everyday? Pause
- My name is Marcus Brassington.
- I would like to bring your attention to the reasons I believe that members of An Garda Síochana should be armed.(Pause)
